T4 The Disappearing Computer: Designing Interaction for Smart Artefacts
Duration: 14:00 – 18:00 (half day), Saturday 14.10
Location: Meeting room 2, Oslo Kongressenter
Dr. Dr. Norbert A. Streitz, Fraunhofer IPSI, Darmstadt, GERMANY
Email:streitz@ipsi.fraunhofer.de
Intended audience
Both practitioners and researchers at beginners to intermediate level
Tutorial goals
The goal of this tutorial is to make researchers and practitioners aware of the implications for interaction design that are caused by the increasing trend of embedding computation in everyday objects creating so called smart artifacts and smart environments. Attendees will gain an overall understanding of the basic principles of designing for ubiquitous and pervasive computing and ambient intelligence, and learn about examples from different applications domains (office, home, public spaces, games and entertainment). While "disappearance" is a major aspect, smart artifacts are also characterized by the use of sensors collecting data about the environment, the devices and humans acting in this context. This combination creates a new set of issues for interaction design as, e.g., privacy aspects. Tutorial attendees will learn about the state-of-the-art in this area and obtain information that will allow them to realize the full potential of this new field in their current and future work.
