T8 Movement quality in interaction design

Duration: 14:00 – 18:00 (half day), Sunday 15.10

Location: Meeting room 2, Oslo Kongressenter

Jin Moen (PhD, MSc, BFA), Movement Interaction, SWEDEN

E-mail: jin@movementinteraction.com

Intended audience

Both practitioners and researcher

Tutorial goals

The aim of the tutorial is to introduce and elaborate the notion of movement quality in relation to human-computer interaction design. The participants will gain a theoretical as well as physical experience of movement quality and its implications for the development of new interaction forms and interfaces. The tutorial will relate to methods and theories used within modern dance, especially improvisation and composition. No prior experience of the subject is needed.

Instructor

Jin Moen holds a BFA in Dance Education from the University College of Dance, a MSc in Engineering Physics from KTH, and a PhD in Human-computer interaction from KTH.

Her recent (2006) PhD project concerned the design and development of human-computer interfaces using bodily movements as basis for interaction. Further, it explored the intersection between art and science as it took its merged her backgrounds in dance and engineering, and thus combined theories and experiences from dance education and HCI. The project was carried out at Interactive Institute in collaboration with the graduate school Estetiska Lärprocesser, and with the School of Computer Science and Communication at Royal Institute of Technology, KTH.

Jin is working as researcher, educator and consultant within areas related to interaction design, concept and prototype development, human-computer interaction, usability, creative processes and modern dance.
